A pair of these cabs were just posted on ebay:

I'm curious if they are modified 817's or something else?

The wedge/ramp between the throats reminds me of early 80's JBL bass horns, but the rest of the cab is way too small to be one of those, i'd like to see a pic of the interior and one showing the depth/horn length. It could be an incarnation from one of many 70's-80's sound companies, for instance Clair Bros made many of their own cabinets back in the day, not to imply that's one of theirs, i've not known them to use a perkins or any other type bass horn. Chances are good that if it's of commercial prduction, someone here will recognize it and post.

    ................ just my 2-1/2 cents

Thanks much. Do you have experience with these? How do they compare to 817's or A7's?

With the right drivers, they can produce a very dynamic sound, with relatively moderate power. Yes, you can get LOUD, too.

You will need subwoofers to augment the shallow LF reponse of this cabinet as well, if you want DEEP bass.

But the midbass you can get from a horn, is, well, its incredible.

It's a newer design, compared to the 817 but what it has mostly is a deeper horn, about 125 hz compard to the 817's 160. As such, slightly more upper bass output.

Both the 817's and this box are mid bass units.

Consensus pretty much these days is to use subs for low and 12's for mid bass. The 12's of old did not handle the power a 15 could.

That said, lot's of people use stuff like this for stereo and are happy with it. The dynamics achieved by horn loading offset the loss of deep bass somewhat. I've never heard a set of these in a stereo setup so I don't know how well they would work, but should be comparable to 817's. They are loud. Something like 106 db 1w/1m.
